KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Assurance & Technical Engagement Oversight

  • Lead the planning and execution of compilation, review, and limited scope audit engagements, including those of a complex nature.

  • Supervise the preparation and review of financial statements in accordance with applicable accounting standards (ASPE/GAAP).

  • Monitor engagement risk, quality, timelines, and budgets across all assurance assignments.

  • Apply strong technical knowledge to identify accounting and tax issues, develop practical solutions, and provide detailed file reviews.

Client Relationship Management

  • Manage a diverse client portfolio of owner-managed businesses, understanding their operations, risks, and strategic goals.

  • Attend and contribute to year-end client meetings alongside Partners, presenting key findings and providing insights.

  • Maintain strong client relationships by delivering responsive service and practical advisory support across tax, budgeting, forecasting, and financial reporting.

  • Translate complex financial matters into clear, actionable advice tailored to different audiences.

Leadership & Practice Development

  • Contribute to firm-wide operational and strategic planning, identifying opportunities to improve workflow, client engagement, and internal systems.

  • Support the business development process by participating in proposal preparation and identifying growth opportunities within existing client relationships.

  • Promote SBLR’s vision and values through professional conduct, enthusiasm, and dedication.

Team Management & Mentorship

  • Lead and manage a team of up to five team members (junior to senior accountants, bookkeepers, and admin staff).

  • Allocate work, oversee file progress, and ensure adherence to firm policies and timelines.

  • Guide team members through all stages of engagements — from planning and execution to review and final deliverables.

  • Conduct regular performance evaluations, provide mentorship, and support the professional development and growth of team members.

  • Oversee engagement process, including work-in-progress (WIP), budgeting, billing, collections, and variance analysis.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • CPA designation, and must have Public Accounting License

  • Minimum 5 years of experience in public practice, ideally within a small to mid-sized firm

  • At least 2 years of team supervision, including performance management and mentorship

  • Solid experience leading assurance engagements (compilation, review, audit) and client file management

  • Familiarity with investment holding companies, reconciliations, and tax compliance

  • Strong knowledge of job profitability, billing practices, and cloud-based file management

TECHNICAL PROFICIENCY

  • Accounting & Tax Software: CaseWare/CaseView, CCH iFirm (Docs & Taxprep T1, T2, T3), QuickBooks (Online/Desktop), Xero, Dext, Wagepoint

  • Productivity Tools: Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook (advanced Excel proficiency preferred)
